Keep The Windows Open

May 31, 2009

Last month we planted a garden.  Zucchini, squash, tomatoes, peppers, beans, corn and raspberries are slowly beginning to creep up around the cages deemed to contain them.  We have already enjoyed the process of watching our “crop” as it begins to ripen and imagining what we will fix with the delicious, fresh produce that we harvest.

As I lay on the couch this afternoon, feeling my “seed” disrupt it’s surroundings, I imagine what will be harvested from this process as well.  Who will he/she look like?  What will they love to do?  How will we convey so many important things to this child?  I can’t wait to meet you!  Are you really there?!  What will this child laugh at, cry about, fear?

As he gets me comfortable, Andrew prepares for his afternoon bike ride.  “Keep the windows open, Bec,” he says to me, “the fresh air helps things grow.”

I fall asleep to the breeze as it nourishes our veggies in the garden and as it blows through my hair…reminding me that these moments are all worth it and getting me more and more excited for the “seed” to grow.
